This Week in Room 5

This Week we continue our work Reading and Writing Informational Texf.

In Reading we have adjusted our thinking to look for all of the amazing and wonderful things in the world. The students have been finding interesting talking points in their texts and learning how to have meaningful conversations about their Reading with a partner.

The students are continuing to work on their All About pieces. This week the students are drafting their chapters, working on revising and finding pictures on line to insert into their documents. Everyone's doing a fabulous job!

In Math we have been working on Place Value, using number lines and reviewing addition and subtraction.

In Science we are finishing up a unit on Light Energy. Study guides will be coming home soon. There will be a test on Tuesday, 12/20.

Hour of Code

After trying out Coding for the first time the students generated a list of helpful hints for each other as they continued their work with Coding.

After the students learned the basics through making Elsa and Anna skate they explored other coding activities such as Minecraft, Scratch, and Star Wars. Check out Code.org for more!

Hour of Code

Today we took part in the Hour of Code. It was an amazing experience.  The students were able to write lines of code after watching a demonstration.  We learned that we needed patience and confidence in ourselves in order to be successful. The students did an amazing job. Below are a few links worth checking out.

This Week in Room 5

In Science we have started a unit on Light Energy. Here the students have just learned about the parts of the eye. We are doing an experiment to show how the iris muscles move to let more or less light  into the pupil so that we can see clearly.

In Writers' Workshop we are working on organizing our ideas and information for our ALL About expository pieces.

In Reading the students have been working on Reading expository text and finding the main idea.

In Math we have just begun a unit on Area. The students are using what they know about multiplication and arrays to find the area of a surface.

It was great to be able to meet with families this week for conferences. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know.
Thanks!
