This Week

This week in Reading we focused on what good readers do while they read to get more out of their reading experience. We focused on predicting, retelling and talking with a partner. I have been reading 'Stone Fox' as a mentor text to model these skills. It's a fabulous story about a determined and brave boy.

In Writer's Workshop we have chosen 2 small moment Personal Narrative story ideas and have worked through mapping out timelines of the events. Next week we will chose one that we will work through the drafting, revising, editing and publishing stages. The students' story ideas are great. It will be exciting to see them transformed into narrative pieces.

In Science we have learned about all of the planets in our Solar System and how they orbit the Sun. We started focusing on the Earth and what creates Day/Night and the Seasons. Next week we will focus on the moon and it's many phases. A study guide for our first test will be coming home soon.

We continued learning about multiplication and started learning how division is related as we shared equal groups of objects . The students worked very hard. On Friday, we took a quick brain break before getting back to work

Stuck on an Escalator Video

Check out this video:

Stuck on an Escalator

We watched this inspiring video in class and talked about the need to persevere .  Through out the year you may hear us refer to getting stuck on an escalator... However, we will work through it.

Caine's Arcade and The Cardboard Challenge

This week we discovered Caine's Arcade and are inspired to take part in the Cardboard Challenge.  This year's official challenge is scheduled for October 1st, however we are going to participate in our own scaled back version at JFK in November.  The buzz in our class about it is amazing! Students have been saving their boxes and making their own creations at home.  I love the energy and creativity that has taken off.  Click on the link below to find out more about Caine and this challenge.
